Sintered stone is defined as the process of compacting a solid substance without melting it to the point of liquefaction through heat and pressure. Sintering occurs naturally in mineral deposits or in the manufacturing process, during which the atoms in the material diffuse through the particles, fuse the particles together and form a national body. Therefore, by definition, porcelain, ceramics and rock slabs are all "sintered" materials. But there are some differences between these products.
Tiles are usually made of very dense clay with a water absorption rate of 0.5% or less. Ceramics are made by firing clay with a water absorption rate greater than 0.5%. Both of these are fired at extreme temperatures in a kiln, generally at 800°C-1200°C. Ceramic tiles are divided into glazed and unglazed. Glazed tiles are baked twice, giving them durability and luster. Some people call unglazed tiles "full body". However, most tiles used for larger areas have patterns applied to the surface, which gives them more style options, and reduces porosity and increases durability.
The so-called rock slab in China is generally called "sintered stone" in European and American countries, that is, sintered stone. By definition, rock slabs are also sintered materials like ceramics and tiles. However, there is a big difference in the initial manufacturing process of rock slabs. The main components of rock slabs are clay, feldspar powder, and silica, which are rolled using a system over 16,000 tons of press and fired in a kiln at a high temperature of 1200-1500℃.
The slab is larger than the ceramic tile. The conventional size of the slab is 3200*1600/3000*1500mm, and the conventional thickness is 3/6/12mm. The water absorption rate of the rock slab will also be lower, only 0.02%. In addition, the flatness of the rock slab is relatively higher than that of similar sintered products, and the light reflects without visual dizziness.
In general, tiles, ceramics, and rock slabs are all sintered stone materials by definition, but they are different.
